Seismic performance assessment and retrofit of existing structures | |
The class deals with the seismic performance assessment and the retrofit of existing reinforced concrete structures according to current performance base assessment methodologies available in the Eurocode 8. After a general overview of the basis of seismic engineering and structural response to dynamic loads, the approach, the methodologies and the options available in the current code for structural analysis will be discussed. The nonlinear capacity of RC members will be introduced along with the capacity design approach and the available capacity models to reliably assess the capacity of existing RC members. The course will focus on the non-linear analysis of structural systems by using simplified by-hand methodologies and sophisticated numerical modelling. The definition of the pushover curve, the seismic performance assessment and the identification of the main structural weaknesses will be illustrated. In conclusion, the available strategies for the seismic retrofit of existing buildings will be analysed and a focus on the use of FRP materials, High Performance Concrete and base isolation will be provided. |

Retrofit strategies and innovative materials |
Dr. Ciro Del Vecchio is currently assistant professor at University of Napoli Federico II. He teaches the classes of Innovative Building Materials and Advanced Structural Design within the MSc in Structural and Geotechnical Engineering. His research topics focus on the repair/retrofit of existing RC buildings and infrastructures. He developed a design formulation for the FRP strengthening of RC beam-column joints (recently included in the revision of the fib bulletin 14). He is expert in the field of seismic loss assessment with particular emphasis on the comparison between cost prediction and actual repair costs. Recently, in cooperation with University of Canterbury, New Zealand he supported the development of the new NZSEE guidelines for seismic assessment of existing buildings. He is currently working on developing cost-effective and easy-to-install retrofit solutions for the seismic retrofit of existing buildings including the base isolation, High Performance Concrete and composite materials. He is the PI/collaborator of several research project on the development of innovative integrated retrofit solutions for existing school buildings (reSTARt-school and ReLUIS WP3). He organized thematic sessions at international conferences (Compdyn 2017, 2019, 16th ECEE, ANIDIS 2019). He is author of more than 30 publications on international journals, conference proceedings, book chapters. He is the CEO of the university spin-off SEISMART srl dealing with the knowledge transfer of innovative retrofit solutions and methodologies in the current design practice. |
